The Federal Government has donated N30 million to the family of the late Taiwo Akinkunmi, the designer of Nigeria’s national flag. The donation was presented on Thursday at his home in Elebu, Ibadan, by Lanre Issa-Onilu, Director General of the National Orientation Agency (NOA), alongside Olukemi Afolayan, the agency’s Oyo State director.
Issa-Onilu emphasized that the N30 million was not a compensation for Akinkunmi’s work, but rather a gesture of support for his family in recognition of his invaluable contributions to Nigeria. Akinwunmi Akinkunmi, one of the late designer’s sons, expressed heartfelt appreciation to President Bola Tinubu for the kind gesture.
Taiwo Akinkunmi passed away on August 29, 2023, at the age of 87. After his death, President Tinubu sent a government delegation, led by the Minister of Information and National Orientation, Mohammed Malagi, to convey condolences. Akinkunmi was laid to rest in Ibadan, Oyo State, in September 2024 after a year-long wait for a state-organized funeral. The service was held at the Obafemi Awolowo Stadium, Liberty Road, Ibadan.
During the service, Akinwunmi stated that the family was open to any initiative by the Federal Government to honor the legacy of the flag designer.
