Nigeria’s Police Service Commission has ordered the immediate retirement of senior police officers who have served for 35 years or are above 60 years old. This decision comes amid controversy over the tenure of Inspector General of Police Kayode Egbetokun, who recently turned 60.
The commission reversed its earlier stance, which allowed police officers to use their date of enlistment instead of their initial appointment date. However, the commission has now decided that this decision contradicted the principle of merger of service in the public service and violated Public Service Rule No. 020908.
The rule mandates retirement upon reaching 35 years in service or the age of 60. The commission’s decision has been communicated to the Inspector General of Police for implementation.
The Police Service Commission’s directive is expected to affect several senior police officers, including those who have served for over 35 years or are above 60 years old. The commission’s decision is seen as a move to ensure compliance with the public service rules and to avoid any controversy over the tenure of senior police officers.
