The European Union (EU) reaffirmed its support for the Nigerian government’s efforts to strengthen democracy by backing initiatives that enhance the political capacity of young people in Nigeria. Through the Support to Democratic Governance in Nigeria Programme, the EU funds Yiaga Africa’s Constituency Office Internship Programme, which aims to provide young Nigerians with hands-on experience in politics and governance.

Launched in December 2024, the three-month programme, set to conclude in February 2025, offers an invaluable opportunity for young individuals passionate about democratic development. It allows participants to deepen their understanding of legislative processes and engage directly with constituency offices, fostering a deeper connection between lawmakers and their constituents.

Zissimos Vergos, Deputy Head of the EU Delegation to Nigeria and ECOWAS, emphasized the EU’s belief that a flourishing democracy is anchored in responsible leadership and active citizen participation. “Young people play a crucial role in advancing Nigeria’s democracy through their active involvement in electoral and governance processes,” he stated. “By engaging with lawmakers through internships, the programme not only helps them grasp the legislative process but also enables them to contribute meaningfully to policy discussions and constituency engagement.”

Vergos also stressed the importance of providing young people with platforms for active involvement in governance. “We must move beyond excuses. When ethical action is ignored, democratic institutions suffer. Rather than criticizing democracy, we should focus on making ethical decisions that strengthen it.”

Yiaga Africa’s Programme Manager, Yetunde Bakarei, highlighted the programme’s positive impact on fostering stronger relationships between lawmakers and their constituencies. “The Constituency Office Internship Programme ensures youth participation in the democratic process, allowing young people to shape policies that directly affect them,” she said. “The EU’s support makes this possible, and we are grateful for their continued partnership in empowering young Nigerians.”

Interns also shared their transformative experiences. Olaiya Oluwadamilola expressed how the programme has bolstered her confidence and professional skills, inspiring her to pursue a career in politics. “This internship has not only improved my communication abilities but also motivated me to give back to my community,” she said.

Another intern, Salihu Gode, praised the EU’s focus on inclusive governance and the importance of mentorship in political career development. “With the skills and knowledge I’ve gained, I am confident in my ability to drive positive change in my community and contribute to Nigeria’s democratic growth,” she said. Gode also voiced her commitment to promoting female participation in politics, an area the EU actively supports.
