Canada’s High Commission in Nigeria has acknowledged reports of visa denials for senior Nigerian military officials, including Chief of Defence Staff General Christopher Musa, but refused to comment further due to privacy concerns.
The controversy surrounds Canada’s decision to deny visas to some members of a Nigerian delegation invited to an event honoring war veterans, while others received theirs. General Musa expressed disappointment and frustration, describing the situation as a “wake-up call” for Nigeria to strengthen its sovereignty.
National Security Adviser Nuhu Ribadu condemned Canada’s actions, calling the visa denial “disrespectful” and emphasizing the need for Nigeria to focus on internal strength.
Canada’s decision to deny visas may be due to various reasons, including criminal history, previous deportations, health risks, or providing inaccurate information on the application. However, without further comment from the Canadian High Commission, the specific reasons remain unclear.
