Members of the Association of Resident Doctors at the University College Hospital (UCH) in Ibadan have begun an indefinite strike due to a partial power outage in some residential areas.
The strike, which started on Monday, was confirmed by the association’s General Secretary, Dr. Uthman Adedeji.
Although the Ibadan Electricity Distribution Company reconnected UCH after over 100 days of power outage, only some parts of the residential quarters were reconnected, prompting the doctors to embark on the strike.
Adedeji stated that the association had issued a communique threatening a strike if electricity was not restored by 4 p.m. on Monday.
He explained that the partial restoration of power was insufficient, and the association had no choice but to embark on the strike until all residential quarters had power.
“We acknowledge the efforts of the UCH Management towards meeting our demand, but a lot needs to be done to guarantee uninterrupted service delivery,” Adedeji said.
The doctors emphasized that the strike was necessary to ensure that their welfare and working conditions were prioritized.
The association’s General Secretary assured that the doctors would regularly review the situation and consider returning to work once their demands were met.
The strike is expected to affect healthcare services at the hospital until the issue is resolved.
