The Nigerian Senate has summoned the National Security Adviser, Mallam Nuhu Ribadu, along with the Directors General of the Department of State Services (DSS), the National Intelligence Agency (NIA), and the Defence Intelligence Agency (DIA) to appear before it in a closed-door session.
The security chiefs are expected to provide explanations regarding accusations against the United States Agency for International Development (USAID) for allegedly funding Boko Haram insurgency in Nigeria.
The allegation was made recently by U.S. Congressman Scott Perry, who claimed that USAID had been involved in supporting Boko Haram’s activities. While the U.S. Congress is already investigating the matter, the Nigerian Senate has also decided to launch its own investigation. This decision followed a motion titled “Urgent Need to Investigate the Alleged Funding of Boko Haram by the United States Agency for International Development (USAID),” sponsored by Senator Ali Ndume of Borno South and co-sponsored by eight other senators.
Following discussions on the motion, the Senate resolved to summon the heads of the security agencies to appear in a closed-door session, with the date to be communicated to them.
More details will follow.
