President Donald Trump announced on Tuesday that he has directed the removal of all remaining U.S. attorneys appointed by his predecessor, Joe Biden.

In a post on his Truth Social platform, Trump stated, “Over the past four years, the Department of Justice has been politicized like never before.” He went on to add, “Therefore, I have instructed the termination of ALL remaining ‘Biden Era’ U.S. Attorneys.”

Trump emphasized the need for immediate action, saying, “We must ‘clean house’ IMMEDIATELY and restore confidence. America’s Golden Age must have a fair Justice System – THAT BEGINS TODAY!”

It is customary for a new president to replace U.S. attorneys appointed by the previous administration. There are 93 U.S. attorneys across 94 federal court districts in the country, with two districts sharing a single attorney. U.S. attorneys serve as the top federal law enforcement officers in their districts.

Several U.S. attorneys nominated by Biden resigned after Trump’s victory in the 2020 election, anticipating their replacement. The Department of Justice, which Trump has accused of unfairly prosecuting him, has been undergoing a significant overhaul since his return to office, with several high-ranking officials being fired, reassigned, or demoted.

This shakeup includes the dismissal of members of Special Counsel Jack Smith’s team, who pursued two criminal cases against Trump, which have since been dropped. Additionally, the acting U.S. attorney for the influential Southern District of New York, a Trump appointee, resigned last week after being urged by the Justice Department to dismiss corruption charges against New York Mayor Eric Adams.
