The Nigerian National Petroleum Company Limited (NNPCL) has announced plans to perform 2,000 medical surgeries by the end of the second quarter of 2025. This was revealed by NNPCL’s Chief Corporate Communications Officer, Olufemi Soneye, during a stakeholders’ engagement with the National Assembly Press Corps in Abuja on Saturday.

Soneye highlighted the company’s ongoing contributions to Nigeria’s socio-economic development, emphasizing that its efforts go beyond its core oil and gas responsibilities. He shared that through the NNPCL Foundation, the company has already facilitated 1,000 free cataract surgeries in the South-West, with plans to conduct another 1,000 surgeries in the North and an additional 1,000 in the South-East and South-South regions.

“Our goal is not only to provide affordable fuel to Nigerians but also to contribute to the development of a better Nigeria,” Soneye stated.

Additionally, Soneye spoke about NNPCL’s collaboration with Afreximbank to establish the African Medical Centre of Excellence (AMCE), a 500-bed hospital that will focus on oncology, haematology, cardiology, and advanced medical training. This state-of-the-art medical centre is set to open in June 2025.

The company also updated stakeholders on its medical hospital in Abuja, which treated 122,483 patients in 2024. This facility has been essential in providing emergency care, maternity services, and surgeries, among other health services.

Soneye reinforced the importance of oil in Nigeria’s development, not only as a commodity but as a driving force behind the country’s economic and social progress. He reaffirmed NNPCL’s commitment to ensuring energy accessibility and fostering partnerships that support national prosperity and sustainability.

The NNPCL’s medical initiatives and strategic investments are seen as a part of the company’s broader effort to positively impact Nigerians’ lives and promote a healthier, more prosperous nation.
