An independent investigative panel has commenced its investigation into corruption allegations against senior personnel of the Nigerian Correctional Service (NCoS).
The panel’s secretary, Dr. Uju Agomoh, chaired the session on Tuesday in Abuja, revealing that several cases involved senior correctional officers in charge of custodial centers across Nigeria.
Agomoh stated that the panel aims to conduct a thorough inquiry and recommend immediate measures to prevent future occurrences and improve correctional administration and services in Nigeria.
The allegations include corruption, torture, cruelty, inhumane, and degrading treatment by correctional officers in Nigeria’s correctional facilities.
The panel’s scope of work includes recommendations for immediate, medium-term, and long-term actions.
The Minister of Interior, Dr. Olubunmi Tunji-Ojo, established the independent investigative panel following a high-profile case involving cross-dresser Idris Okunneya, also known as Bobrisky.
The panel is also investigating cases of corruption and extortion against the person in charge of Kuje custodial center, Iloafonsi Ikechukwu.
