The House of Representatives has urged the Federal Government to take immediate action to prevent the spread of diphtheria in Unity Colleges across the country.

The call follows the outbreak of the disease at King’s College in Lagos, which resulted in the death of a 12-year-old student and hospitalized several others.

The lawmakers mandated the Federal Ministry of Education to strengthen health and safety protocols in all Unity Colleges, and tasked the Ministry of Health, the National Primary Health Care Development Agency (NPHCDA), and the Nigeria Centre for Disease Control (NCDC) to intensify vaccination and awareness campaigns.

The House also directed the NCDC to establish disease surveillance systems in all Unity Colleges to ensure early detection and rapid response to infectious disease outbreaks.

The lawmakers commended the Lagos State Government, the NCDC, and other health authorities for their swift response to the outbreak.
