China has called for open dialogue with the United States to ease rising trade tensions between the two largest global economies, which have been marked by reciprocal tariffs on each other’s imports.

“China has consistently advocated that both nations should adopt a positive and cooperative approach to addressing differences and disputes in economic and trade matters,” stated He Yongqian, spokesperson for China’s commerce ministry, at a press conference.

She emphasized that any communication or negotiation must be based on mutual respect, equality, and mutual benefit. He also warned that threats and intimidation would only worsen the situation. “It is hoped that the United States and China will collaborate to return to resolving issues through dialogue and consultation,” she added.

Since President Donald Trump’s return to office in January, the US has implemented tariffs on several major trading partners, including China, Mexico, and Canada, citing concerns over the flow of fentanyl and related chemicals. This month, Trump raised the previous 10% tariff on Chinese goods to 20%.

In response, China imposed tariffs up to 15% on US agricultural products, including soybeans, pork, and chicken. Additionally, as the world’s leading steel producer, China pledged to take “all necessary measures” to protect its interests following new US tariffs on steel and aluminum imports.
