US President Donald Trump stated on Sunday that he had “no intention” of easing steel and aluminum tariffs as tensions between Washington and major trade partners escalate, edging closer to a potential trade war.
Since January, Trump has imposed tariffs on various trading partners, including steel and aluminum, which have sparked turmoil in financial markets and raised concerns about the risk of pushing the US economy into a recession.
Speaking to reporters aboard Air Force One, Trump made it clear that he would not be making exceptions to these tariffs, stating: “No, I have no intention of that.”
The president reaffirmed his commitment to impose reciprocal tariffs beginning on April 2, aiming to address trade practices that the US considers unfair. This move raises the possibility of more products and trading partners being specifically targeted.
“April 2 is a liberating day for our country,” Trump said. “Billions of dollars have already come into our country, and the big money is coming in from April 2.”
