The Federal Government of Nigeria has allocated N700 billion to combat HIV/AIDS, Tuberculosis, malaria, and immunization, Chairman of the House Committee on HIV/AIDS, Tuberculosis, and Malaria, Dr. Amobi Ogah, announced on Tuesday.

The funding was revealed at the 2025 Pre-World TB Day press conference in Abuja, and it comes as the US administration withdraws financial support for HIV/AIDS, TB, and malaria in Nigeria.

According to Ogah, the allocation demonstrates the government’s commitment to fighting these diseases, and he commended President Ahmed Bola Tinubu for the initiative.

The committee has also called on the government to advocate for increased global TB funding allocation from 18% to 30%. Additionally, the government plans to pass a law protecting persons affected by TB from discrimination and stigmatization.

The committee will ensure transparency and accountability in the disbursement of funds to prevent mismanagement.

Nigeria ranks sixth globally and first in Africa in TB burden, with approximately 467,000 TB cases recorded in 2023.

The World Health Organisation (WHO) has warned that TB remains a major public health concern, particularly in low- and middle-income countries.

The government’s allocation is expected to boost efforts to combat TB and other diseases in Nigeria.
