The Goods Made-in-China Importers Association (GMIA), a key Nigerian trade body, has urged the United States to lift its 34% tariffs on Chinese imports.
The group warns that these tariffs could have a detrimental effect on the global economy, particularly destabilizing African nations. GMIA Chairman Charles Udeogaranya shared his concerns in a statement to Sunday PUNCH.
Udeogaranya pointed out that the global economy is still recovering from the COVID-19 pandemic and cautioned that high tariffs could ignite another recession. He called for the US to avoid escalating trade tensions, stressing the importance of US-China collaboration for mutual economic prosperity and global peace.
“Tariffs and actions that threaten national sovereignty, like those involving Taiwan, only contribute to unnecessary tensions,” Udeogaranya said.
