The Nigerian Meteorological Agency (NiMet) has issued a warning of intense heat and thermal discomfort in Gombe and 17 other northern states, including the Federal Capital Territory, Abuja.

According to NiMet’s weather outlook released on Friday and shared with the News Agency of Nigeria (NAN) on Saturday by Gayus Musa, the Meteorological Manager for Gombe State, temperatures in the affected areas could soar up to 40°C starting from April 12.

The states expected to be impacted are: Borno, Adamawa, Taraba, Yobe, Bauchi, Jigawa, Kano, Katsina, Kaduna, Zamfara, Sokoto, Kebbi, Niger, Kogi, Nasarawa, Benue, and the FCT.

“Following recent rainfall, heat and discomfort levels are expected to rise significantly due to clear skies and increasing temperatures,” NiMet stated.

Residents are advised to stay in cool, well-ventilated environments, wear light, breathable clothing, and stay hydrated. Musa emphasized avoiding direct sun exposure between 12 p.m. and 3 p.m., and urged people to limit strenuous outdoor activities.

“It’s important we look out for vulnerable groups, such as children and the elderly,” Musa added. He also called on community leaders and public health stakeholders to raise awareness on heat stress risks and how to mitigate them.
