Mark Carney, the newly elected leader of Canada’s Liberal Party, delivered a strong rebuke of U.S. President Donald Trump during his victory speech on Sunday, as reported by Forbes.
Carney firmly rejected Trump’s suggestion that Canada should become the 51st state of the United States, declaring, “Canada will never, ever… be a part of America in any way, shape, or form.”
The former governor of the Bank of Canada and the Bank of England also condemned Trump’s trade policies, accusing him of attempting to undermine Canada’s economy by imposing unjustified tariffs.
He warned that if Trump succeeded in his efforts, it could lead to the destruction of Canada’s way of life. “The Americans want our resources, our water, our land, our country… If they succeeded, they would destroy our way of life,” Carney said.
Carney also contrasted the U.S. healthcare system with Canada’s, stating, “In America, healthcare is a big business… in Canada, it is a right.”
Carney, who won the leadership race with nearly 86% of the vote, pledged to maintain retaliatory tariffs against the U.S. “until the Americans show us respect,” framing the move as part of a broader effort to protect Canada’s resources, economy, and sovereignty.
Carney is set to succeed Justin Trudeau as the country’s Prime Minister after being sworn in by the Governor General. Trudeau had announced his decision to step down earlier this year amid pressure within his party. Following his swearing-in, Carney is expected to call for an early federal election.
