In a statement on Tuesday, China expressed its hope for a “just and lasting solution” to the ongoing war between Ukraine and Russia, as talks are scheduled between Ukrainian and US officials in Saudi Arabia.
Foreign ministry spokesperson Mao Ning emphasized China’s support for all efforts contributing to a peaceful resolution of the crisis, stating, “We expect and hope that all parties can reach a fair and lasting solution that is acceptable to all sides.” She further added, “China is willing to continue cooperating with the international community to play a constructive role in the political resolution of the crisis.”
China presents itself as a neutral party in the conflict, claiming not to provide lethal assistance to either side, in contrast to the US and other Western nations. However, it maintains a close political and economic relationship with Russia, and NATO members have criticized Beijing for being a “decisive enabler” of the war, which China has never condemned.
The talks, set to take place in Saudi Arabia, will be the most senior discussions since a contentious White House visit last month, where US President Donald Trump chastised Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky for perceived ingratitude.
