China is set to host Russia and Iran for trilateral discussions on Tehran’s nuclear programme this Friday, according to a statement from Beijing’s foreign ministry.
A spokesperson from the ministry stated that the three nations will discuss the Iranian nuclear issue and other topics of shared interest.
The meeting will include China’s Vice Foreign Minister Ma Zhaoxu, Russian Deputy Foreign Minister Sergey Alexeevich Ryabkov, and Iranian Deputy Foreign Minister Kazem Gharibabadi.
The United States withdrew from the landmark nuclear deal with Iran during President Donald Trump’s first term in 2018, which had placed restrictions on Iran’s nuclear activities in exchange for sanctions relief. Although Tehran adhered to the agreement for a year after the U.S. pullout, it gradually began to scale back its commitments, and efforts to revive the agreement have since stalled.
