China has announced plans to impose new tariffs on various agricultural products from the United States starting next week, in retaliation against Washington’s recent tariff increase.
According to a statement from China’s finance ministry, a 15% tariff will be added to imports of chicken, wheat, corn, and cotton. Additionally, a 10% tariff will be placed on sorghum, soybeans, pork, beef, aquatic products, fruits, vegetables, and dairy items.
This move follows US President Donald Trump’s decision on Monday to raise the previously imposed 10% tariff on Chinese goods to 20%, further escalating the trade tensions between the two nations.
In response, China condemned the US’s “unilateral tariff imposition” and announced its countermeasures. The finance ministry stated that these actions “increase the burden on US companies and consumers” and weaken the economic and trade cooperation foundation between the two countries.
Moreover, China’s commerce ministry confirmed that it would file a lawsuit with the World Trade Organization regarding the additional 10% tariffs imposed by the US.
