The Cocoa Farmers Alliance Association of Africa (COFAAA) has called on state chairmen of cocoa-producing communities across Nigeria to focus on the welfare of cocoa farmers and demonstrate selflessness to enhance cocoa production in the country.
In a statement shared with PUNCH Online on Saturday, after the inaugural meeting of COFAAA Nigeria in Oyo, COFAAA’s Global President, Adeola Adegoke, emphasized the importance of state chairmen prioritizing cocoa farmers’ welfare to help achieve the association’s goals.
Adegoke highlighted the need for improved agricultural practices and post-harvest processing among Nigerian cocoa farmers. He stressed the importance of capacity building and advocacy to help Nigeria increase its cocoa production share and enhance the quality of its cocoa.
“This is the best approach to market African cocoa and ensure fair pricing on the global market,” Adegoke said.
He also pointed out COFAAA’s strategic importance on the African continent, stressing that the association seeks to empower African cocoa farmers, improve their livelihoods, and increase Africa’s share in global cocoa production through sustainable practices.
Adegoke urged members to collaborate with key stakeholders, such as policymakers, buyers, processors, exporters, and research institutions, to ensure Nigeria’s cocoa industry remains competitive and sustainable internationally.
Additionally, COFAAA plans to strengthen youth involvement in the cocoa value chain in Africa. Adegoke also recognized global cocoa institutions, governments from cocoa-producing countries, and other cocoa companies for their support in advancing African cocoa.
During the event, participants discussed the challenges and opportunities within Nigeria’s cocoa sector. They praised Adegoke for his leadership and commitment to the growth of the cocoa industry and vowed to work together to expand the association’s influence at local levels.
