The Director-General of the Department of State Services (DSS), Mr. Oluwatosin Ajayi, has proposed a policy requiring first-class graduates to join the intelligence agency. This move aims to strengthen national security by ensuring only the best minds are enlisted.

Ajayi emphasized the need for a paradigm shift in recruitment and staffing within security agencies, drawing inspiration from Israel’s selective university admission system. He argued that recruiting top academic performers should be a compulsory national policy.

The DSS DG stressed the importance of shifting public perception, as many Nigerians view security agencies as adversaries rather than allies. This attitude hampers intelligence gathering, peacebuilding, and national integration.

Ajayi’s proposal highlights the need for exceptional intellect in tackling sophisticated criminal networks. “It takes intellect to track criminality,” he said. He noted that the current security challenges facing the country require innovative solutions that can only be provided by the best minds.

In a related development, First Lady Oluremi Tinubu received a delegation from the DSS, applauding the agency for appointing a woman to a high-ranking position. She urged female leaders in the DSS to support one another and execute their duties diligently.

The DSS aims to bolster its operational effectiveness in addressing evolving security threats and strengthening national peace and integration. By recruiting the best minds, the agency hopes to improve its intelligence gathering and analytical capabilities, ultimately enhancing national security.

Ajayi’s proposal has sparked debate among stakeholders, with some arguing that compulsory recruitment may infringe on individual rights. However, proponents of the policy believe it is necessary to ensure national security and stability.
