The Economic Community of West African States (ECOWAS) has called for the removal of excessive checkpoints and restrictive border controls that hinder trade along the Abidjan-Lagos Highway corridor.

This call was made during a three-day workshop in Cotonou, where government officials, transport experts, and key stakeholders gathered to discuss challenges impeding the smooth movement of goods and people across the region.

The 1,028-kilometer corridor, which links major cities like Lagos, Cotonou, Lomé, Accra, and Abidjan, serves as a vital trade route.

Participants stressed the importance of adhering to ECOWAS regulations, which are in line with international best practices, to create a more conducive trade environment and stimulate economic growth.

Chris Appiah, ECOWAS Commission’s Director of Transport, explained that the Corridor Trade and Transport Facilitation framework, when finalized, would provide comprehensive measures to support the construction of a six-lane dual carriageway stretching from Abidjan to Lagos.

“This project will significantly enhance intra-regional trade, facilitate the free movement of people, vehicles, and services, and align with ECOWAS’ regional integration goals. It will also enable Member States to fully leverage the African Continental Free Trade Area,” he said.

The project is expected to drive economic activity, improve cross-border trade, and strengthen the ECOWAS community’s economic integration. Ultimately, it aims to reduce poverty among those who depend on transportation along the corridor for their livelihoods.
