The Economic Community of West African States (ECOWAS) has successfully completed the renovation of a drug treatment and rehabilitation centre at the Aminu Kano Teaching Hospital in Kano State. This project is part of ECOWAS’s ongoing commitment to supporting its member states in the treatment and rehabilitation of individuals with drug use disorders.
The commission issued a statement on Friday confirming the completion of the renovation. The handover ceremony was held on Thursday, where Dr. Daniel Amankwaah, Principal Programme Officer of ECOWAS’s Drug Prevention and Control Division, presented the keys to Prof. Abdulrahman Abba Sheshe, Chief Medical Director of the Aminu Kano Teaching Hospital.
The upgraded facility now includes an expanded Data Ward for Occupational Therapy, which will significantly enhance the hospital’s ability to support patients in rehabilitation.
Since March 25, 2025, ECOWAS has been in Kano as part of a larger initiative to improve drug rehabilitation services across the region. As part of their mission, ECOWAS also conducted an advocacy meeting with local stakeholders to promote awareness and foster collaboration in addressing drug use disorders.
This renovation, along with the advocacy efforts, is a key component of ECOWAS’s ongoing mission to assist member states in tackling drug addiction and enhancing rehabilitation services.
