The Federal Executive Council (FEC) on Monday approved N4.8 billion for the treatment of HIV patients in Nigeria.

This approval comes shortly after U.S. President Donald Trump’s announcement to suspend financial assistance to countries for HIV treatment, among other areas.

Minister of Health and Social Welfare, Ali Pate, made the disclosure while briefing State House correspondents following a FEC meeting chaired by President Bola Tinubu at the Presidential Villa in Abuja.

The Minister explained that the allocated funds would be disbursed over the next four months to ensure HIV patients receive necessary care, despite the contributions of international partners.

In response to the U.S. decision to halt assistance for HIV and tuberculosis treatment, Pate emphasized that the Nigerian government is focusing on transforming the health sector through domestic financing. A committee has been formed, with representatives from the Ministries of Finance, Budget, Defence, Environment, and the Nigeria Governors Forum, to develop a sustainable financing plan.
