The Nigerian government, through the Nigerians in Diaspora Commission (NiDCOM), has announced its readiness to welcome deported Nigerians from the United States. Abdur-Rahman Balogun, Director of Media and Corporate Affairs at NiDCOM, revealed that the Ministry of Foreign Affairs is handling the situation .
A staggering 3,690 Nigerians in the US are facing deportation due to Donald Trump’s crackdown on illegal immigrants. This move is part of the Trump administration’s broader strategy to enforce immigration laws. Mexico and El Salvador top the list of countries with the most deportation cases, with 252,044 and 203,822 individuals, respectively.
To address the situation, the Federal Government has set up an inter-agency committee comprising the Ministry of Foreign Affairs, NiDCOM, Ministry of Humanitarian Affairs, and the office of the National Security Adviser. However, NiDCOM emphasized that it is not aware of any Nigerians in the US being processed for deportation .
The US Immigration and Customs Enforcement (ICE) has intensified its deportation efforts, with hundreds of migrants arrested and others deported on military aircraft. The situation has sparked widespread concern among undocumented Nigerians in the US, who fear being targeted by the ongoing mass deportation campaigns.
