The Federal Government has launched the National Broadband Alliance (NBA), a new initiative aimed at transforming Nigeria’s digital infrastructure and boosting connectivity across the country.

The initiative was unveiled by the Minister of Communications, Innovation, and Digital Economy, Bosun Tijani, who was represented by the Executive Vice Chairman of the Nigerian Communications Commission, Aminu Maida.

According to Tijani, the NBA will significantly enhance broadband penetration, which has grown from 6% in 2015 to approximately 42% as of October 2024.

To support this agenda, the government will deploy 90,000 km of fibre backbone across the nation, connecting underserved and rural communities to high-speed internet.

The initiative aligns with President Bola Ahmed Tinubu’s Renewed Hope Agenda, which prioritizes innovation, technology, and collaboration as key drivers of national prosperity.

Tijani emphasized the importance of strategic partnerships with donors, investors, and other key stakeholders in achieving the NBA’s goals.

The government aims to make broadband accessible, affordable, and inclusive for all Nigerians, recognizing that achieving these targets will require sustained efforts and a holistic approach.

The NBA’s key objectives include achieving 70% broadband penetration by 2025 and 80% by 2027, ensuring a minimum internet speed of 25 Mbps in urban areas, and making broadband affordable and accessible for all Nigerians.
