The Federal Government has called on all radio stations in Nigeria to harness their platforms to raise awareness about climate change and its impacts on the country.

In a statement issued on Thursday in observance of World Radio Day, the Minister of Information and National Orientation, Mohammed Idris, highlighted the vital role of radio in educating and informing communities.

“Through informative and educational programs, radio, like other key media, can equip communities with the knowledge and tools necessary to adapt to climate change and mitigate its effects,” Idris stated.

He encouraged radio stations to collaborate with organizations and climate change experts, providing accurate and reliable information through interviews with scientists, environmentalists, and policymakers. This, he said, would deepen public understanding and support sustainable solutions aligned with President Bola Ahmed Tinubu’s Renewed Hope Agenda.

The Minister further urged the environmental community to reflect on their actions and make simple lifestyle adjustments to address climate change. These include reducing plastic use, conserving energy, and supporting sustainable agriculture. Such changes, he noted, could create lasting positive impact.

“As Nigeria joins the global community in celebrating the role of radio in combating climate change, it is crucial to recognize that the effects of climate change are felt worldwide,” he added.

Idris called on Nigerians to unite with other nations in seeking solutions to protect the planet for future generations. He also congratulated UNESCO for initiating World Radio Day, encouraging the full potential of radio to drive meaningful climate action.
