Fire Breaks Out at MTN Booster Station in Oyo

A fire broke out at an MTN booster station situated on the University of Ibadan campus in Oyo State on Saturday. According to investigations by PUNCH Online, the blaze, which occurred within the Faculty of Nursing, was caused by an electrical surge.

A witness told our correspondent that the incident took place in the early hours of Saturday, around 4 a.m. Another source revealed that the fire damaged the Mikano electrical generator, the control board, and other telecommunications equipment at the booster station.

In response to the incident, Moroof Akinwande, the Special Adviser on Fire Services Reform to Governor Seyi Makinde and Chairman of the State Fire Services Agency, confirmed the event.

He stated that the MTN-owned booster station was affected by the fire, adding, “The state Fire Service quickly responded and contained the blaze at the MTN booster station next to the Faculty of Nursing at the University of Ibadan.”

Akinwande further explained, “The fire was reported exactly at 4:00 a.m. on Saturday, February 22, 2025. Fire personnel, led by ACFS Olubunmi, promptly arrived at the scene. Upon arrival, we found the Mikano electrical generator and control board engulfed in flames. We collaborated with the university’s fire marshals to extinguish the fire, which was caused by an electrical surge.”
