Google has initiated a fresh wave of layoffs within its Platforms and Devices division — the team responsible for Android, Chrome, and Pixel — following a voluntary exit program introduced in January.

The news, first reported by U.S. tech outlet *The Information*, cites an insider familiar with the matter. This move is part of an ongoing restructuring effort that began last year, when Google merged its Android and Chrome teams into a single unit under the leadership of Rick Osterloh. At the time, the combined group had more than 20,000 employees.

A Google spokesperson confirmed the job cuts, stating:

“Since merging the platforms and devices teams last year, we’ve been focused on becoming more agile and efficient. This included some job reductions in addition to the voluntary exit program offered earlier this year.”

This latest development follows Google’s February decision to offer buyouts to staff in its Human Resources division, known internally as People Operations.

The tech sector continues to face widespread job cuts in 2025. Meta has laid off approximately 3,600 workers — about 5% of its workforce — as part of its pivot toward AI and strategic realignment. Amazon has also trimmed 2,100 positions to reduce operational costs.
