The Independent Corrupt Practices and Other Related Offences Commission (ICPC) has announced plans to launch a new initiative aimed at promoting transparency and accountability in local governments.
The program, titled Accountability and Corruption Prevention Programme for Local Governments in Nigeria (CPP-LG), will address systemic corruption and financial mismanagement in the local government sector.
ICPC Chairman, Musa Aliyu, expressed concern over embezzlement, nepotism, contract inflation, and resource misallocation in local government administration. He emphasized that systemic corruption undermines local government functions, leading to inefficiencies, misallocation of resources, and eroded public trust.
“The lack of transparency and accountability further exacerbates these challenges, creating an enabling environment for corrupt practices,” Aliyu stated.
To address these concerns, the ICPC will incorporate strategic measures into the CPP-LG, including enhancing financial autonomy, professionalising local government services, encouraging citizen participation, strengthening institutional mechanisms, and rigorously enforcing existing anti-corruption laws.
The ICPC has already begun monitoring and evaluating local government performance through regular audits, public reporting, and initiatives to foster greater citizen engagement. The formal launch of the CPP-LG will mark a significant step in the commission’s broader anti-corruption drive targeting local governments.
Aliyu called for a collective commitment to the anti-corruption fight, urging collaboration among government agencies, civil society organisations, the private sector, and the international community. He stressed that eradicating corruption requires a sustained, multi-stakeholder approach.
“The fight against corruption demands collective action and unwavering dedication. Nigeria can make significant progress in eradicating corruption by working together and upholding a shared vision of integrity and accountability,” he said.
