The Lord Mayor of Leeds in the United Kingdom, Abigail Katung—wife of Senator Sunday Katung—has been honored with the traditional title of *Gimbiyan Jaba* (Princess of Ham) by the Jaba community in Kaduna State.
The coronation ceremony was held on Friday at the Kpop Ham Palace in Kwoi, Jaba Local Government Area. The event drew a distinguished audience including military officials, government dignitaries, and scholars.
In addition to the Lord Mayor, several other prominent individuals were recognized:
– Dr. Gideon Jock received the title Hasken Jaba (Light of Jaba)
– Barr. Dr. Deborah Usman was named Jakadiyan Jaba (Ambassador of Jaba)
– Engr. Dr. Dogara Gyet was conferred the title Jagaban Jaba (Forerunner of Jaba)
Speaking at the ceremony, Mayor Katung expressed heartfelt gratitude. “To be remembered and celebrated by your people after many years abroad is truly special. This recognition means a great deal to me,” she said.
She highlighted the power of culture in shaping identity and urged young girls to pursue their dreams with confidence and determination. Acknowledging her husband’s constant support, she emphasized the importance of gender inclusion.
“I urge those in leadership to foster environments where women can thrive. Women make up half the world’s population—and gave birth to the other half,” she stated.
Senator Katung congratulated his wife and the other awardees, extending his appreciation to the Kpop Ham, Dr. Danladi Gyet Maude, for the honor. “This acknowledgment reflects your dedication, integrity, and service to the Ham people,” he said.
The celebration also highlighted the rich cultural heritage of the Ham Nation and underscored the value of traditional titles in preserving identity and leadership within the community. The honorees are expected to serve as ambassadors and uphold the values of the Ham Nation.
