In a groundbreaking development, the first direct cargo ship from Shanghai to Lagos has arrived at the PTML Terminal, Tin Can Island Port Complex. The MV Great Cotonou, a container-roll-on roll-off vessel, marks a significant milestone in maritime trade between China and Nigeria.
The vessel, owned by Grimaldi Group, offers the fastest transit time on this route, just 27 days. This direct service eliminates delays and additional handling costs associated with transhipment at intermediary ports.
According to Ascanio Russo, Managing Director of PTML, the arrival of the vessel represents a pivotal moment for Nigerian importers. “We have the infrastructure, the expertise, and the human capital to offer a great service to our importers and exporters,” Russo said.
The terminal has upgraded its facilities to receive this type of vessel, including the acquisition of a massive mobile harbour crane worth over $10 million. “We have recently acquired a massive mobile harbour crane which cost more than $10m. Also, we had to upgrade our infrastructure, quayside with investment over $5m just to accommodate these ships,” Russo added.
Andrea Grimaldi, a member of the Grimaldi family, emphasized the significance of this direct trade link. “Our goal is to create a fast and efficient trade link between Shanghai and West Africa, particularly Lagos. This direct connection will reinforce Lagos as a key hub in global maritime logistics.”
The launch of this direct shipping route is expected to boost economic growth, enhance trade, and provide world-class logistics solutions in Nigeria. Nigerian businesses and logistics operators now have access to a faster, more efficient, and cost-effective trade link with China.
The arrival of the MV Great Cotonou marks a significant step forward in strengthening trade relations between China and Nigeria. As trade volumes continue to grow, this direct shipping route is poised to play a critical role in facilitating the exchange of goods between the two nations.
