The Lagos State University Teaching Hospital (LASUTH) has screened over 500 Lagos residents for kidney disease as part of activities to commemorate the 2025 World Kidney Day.
The exercise, which was carried out in collaboration with the Nigerian Association of Nephrology, aimed to raise awareness about kidney disease and the importance of early detection.
According to experts, kidney disease is a significant public health concern in Nigeria, with millions of people affected. The disease can progress silently, and by the time symptoms appear, it may be too late.
The screening exercise included checks for hypertension, diabetes, and urine analysis to detect early signs of kidney disease. Participants were also provided with counseling and referrals for further treatment if necessary.
Nephrologists emphasized the importance of awareness and early detection in preventing the progression of kidney disease. They also called for increased government support and funding for renal care services.
The event was part of a broader effort to improve kidney health in Lagos State and reduce the burden of kidney disease on individuals and the healthcare system.
