Chelsea manager Enzo Maresca has confirmed that Filip Jorgensen is now the club’s first-choice goalkeeper, replacing Robert Sanchez. The decision comes after Sanchez made several costly errors this season, including in the 3-1 defeat to Manchester City last month.
Jorgensen, 22, made his debut in the 2-1 league win against West Ham earlier this month and has now been given the nod ahead of Sanchez. Maresca revealed that he had been trying to give Sanchez time to recover mentally and physically, but has now decided to stick with Jorgensen.
“The idea is not to change the keeper game by game,” Maresca said. “In this moment, our keeper is Filip.” Chelsea face Brighton on Friday, and Jorgensen is expected to start in goal.
Maresca’s decision may come as a surprise to some, but the Italian believes it is the right move for the team. He also expressed his pride in Chelsea’s progress this season, despite a recent dip in form. “I don’t think what we have done can be cancelled or can be no good,” he said. “We’re going to try to finish in the best way we can.”
Chelsea’s season has been marked by inconsistency, with the team struggling to find momentum. However, Maresca remains optimistic about their chances of securing a top-four finish. “We’re still in a good position in the league,” he said. “We just need to focus on our next game and take it one step at a time.”
The decision to drop Sanchez has raised questions about the goalkeeper’s future at Chelsea. However, Maresca was quick to praise the Spaniard’s abilities, saying that he is still a valuable member of the team. “Robert is a great goalkeeper,” he said. “He just needs to work on his mental toughness and regain his confidence.”
