Former central banker Mark Carney will be sworn in as Canada’s next Prime Minister on Friday morning, alongside his cabinet, the Governor General’s office announced on Wednesday.
Carney, the newly elected Liberal leader, had promised a “seamless and quick” transition as he succeeds Justin Trudeau, who resigned in January after almost a decade in power.
At 59, Carney, a political newcomer, won the Liberal leadership in a landslide, securing 86% of over 150,000 votes. His entry into politics follows his tenure at the Bank of Canada and the Bank of England, at a time when trade tensions with the United States are escalating.
In his victory speech, Carney adopted a defiant stance towards Washington, declaring, “In trade as in hockey, Canada will win.”
On Wednesday, he expressed readiness to meet with U.S. President Donald Trump to discuss a renewed trade agreement, aiming to resolve ongoing economic conflicts. Earlier, a 25% tariff on steel and aluminum imports from Canada to the U.S. was imposed, prompting retaliatory tariffs from Canada.
