The Network Against Corruption and Trafficking (NACAT), a civil society organization, has declared the fight against corruption as crucial to securing a better Nigeria. The group called on Nigerians from all sectors to unite in the battle against corruption, which it sees as a nationwide enemy.
This declaration came as NACAT inaugurated its South-South Office in Uyo, Akwa Ibom State, aiming to strengthen its anti-corruption efforts in the region.
Speaking to the press in Uyo on Saturday, the South-South Coordinator of NACAT, Mr. Michael Ekpo, reaffirmed the organization’s commitment to eradicating corruption. He described it as the common enemy of the country, one that has brought widespread harm to the nation’s development.
Ekpo pointed out the damaging effects of corruption, citing its role in the collapse of the educational system, the rise in youth unemployment, and the breakdown of healthcare services. He also noted that corruption has allowed Nigeria’s shared resources to be concentrated in the hands of a few individuals, leaving the majority in poverty.
“Corruption is the reason our education system is failing, our healthcare system is crumbling, and our youth are left jobless and without hope,” Ekpo stated. “It’s the reason why the wealth of the nation is controlled by a small group, while the rest of the population struggles to survive, surviving only on scraps.”
He called the fight against corruption a fight for a better, more accountable Nigeria, where leaders are reminded of their duty to serve the public good. “Our leaders must understand that they are in power to serve the people, not for their own benefit or that of any select group,” Ekpo emphasized.
