The nation’s electricity grid collapsed just before noon on Wednesday, according to updates posted on the official Twitter account @NationalGridNg.

A tweet read: “There was a ‘GRID DISTURBANCE’ before noon today. Parts of the country experienced outages. Further information will follow shortly.”

Ikeja Electricity Distribution Company confirmed on Twitter that the outage occurred at 11:34 am. Their post stated: “Please be informed that we experienced a system outage today, 12th February 2025, at 11:34 hrs, affecting all our feeders. Restoration of supply is ongoing in collaboration with our critical stakeholders.”

The Abuja Electricity Distribution Company also acknowledged the disruption on Twitter: “Dear Valued Customer, we regret to inform you that a system disturbance occurred on the national grid at 11:34 am today, causing a power outage across our franchise areas. Gradual restoration of power has begun, and we are working closely with relevant stakeholders to fully restore electricity as soon as the grid stabilizes. We appreciate your understanding and patience as we work to improve our service.”

This marks the first collapse of the grid in 2025, following a line tripping incident in January. Last year, the grid collapsed a total of 12 times.

The blackout sparked frustration among many social media users. Fattybright (@OyedemiBabs) wrote: “Two different reasons, abeg, who should we believe now? If not for solar, the expenses for PMS would’ve hit us hard. @NationalGridNg, please be specific – ‘shortly’ won’t fix what I need, original light! Anyway, thanks for the info.”

Gambino (@holuwhartoby) questioned: “Which one be grid disturbance again? Has it collapsed or not?”

Another user, Ayo Omo Ogun (@MDamsman), expressed: “It’s been a challenging day in Obada, especially with the frustrations caused by @IBEDC_NG. Now, it seems the introduction of the light grid is just adding to our troubles. It’s a lot to handle.”

Awosanya Remilekun (@awosanyaremmy1) commented: “It’s highly regrettable, especially with the weather being unfriendly.”
