The Nigerian Electricity Regulatory Commission (NERC) has introduced the Customer Bill of Rights and Obligations to strengthen consumer protection and ensure fair service delivery within the Nigerian Electricity Supply Industry (NESI).
The new framework, developed under the Electricity Act (EA) 2023, guarantees key consumer rights, including access to reliable and quality electricity, transparent billing, efficient complaint resolution, contract clarity, data privacy, and protection from unfair practices.
According to NERC, customers are entitled to clear and accurate information about electricity rates, service terms, and connection procedures. The bill also outlines key consumer responsibilities, including timely bill payment, granting access for meter installation and maintenance, ensuring compliance with safety standards, and reporting any unauthorized electricity use or meter tampering.
NERC emphasized that the Customer Protection Regulations (CPR 2023) were developed to align Nigeria’s electricity service standards with international best practices.
The commission urged consumers to be well-informed about their rights and obligations to promote a more transparent and accountable electricity market.
