The final report of the Nigerien National Conference has been ceremoniously handed over to the head of the junta, General Abdourahamane Tchiani, in a grand ceremony held in Niamey.

Mamoudou Harouna Djingarey, head of the Sinder canton and president of the National Conference Commission, presented the document to the National Council for the Safeguarding of the Homeland (CNSP) leader. The event was witnessed by high-ranking officials, including Prime Minister Ali Lamine Zeine, former presidents, government members, traditional and religious leaders, and representatives of international organisations.

Brigadier General Mohamed Toumba, Niger’s Minister of the Interior, praised the commitment and responsibility of the conference participants, while General Tchiani commended the quality of the work done.

From February 15 to 19, the national conference gathered 716 civil and military representatives to chart the country’s future under military rule. Delegates recommended a 60-month transition period before returning to civilian governance, a proposal extending the initial three-year transition promised by Tchiani after seizing power in July 2023. The timeline, however, remains subject to change depending on the security situation.

Among the key resolutions, the conference suggested an amnesty for those involved in the coup that ousted President Mohamed Bazoum and other soldiers convicted of attempting to overthrow past governments. The body also proposed granting General Tchiani the official title of “President of the Republic” and dissolving existing political parties in favour of a new political charter.

Speaking on behalf of the conference, Mme Barry Bibata Niandou emphasised the commitment to maintaining Niger’s republican system while preserving its democratic and social values.
