The Niger State Government has announced plans to transition key facilities, including the Government House, IBB Specialist Hospital, Water Board, and Secretariat, off the national grid to alternative power supply.

Governor Mohammed Umaru Bago made the announcement during a meeting with the management of the Abuja Electricity Distribution Company (AEDC) at the Government House in Minna.

The Governor outlined plans for the establishment of a 200 megawatt solar park, along with other initiatives aimed at enhancing alternative power supply for the state.

According to Bago, the transition to solar energy has already begun, as all streetlights in the state have been converted to solar power. Efforts are also underway to implement a 25 megawatt mini-grid that will serve all local government areas.

In addition, the state government is collaborating with a private company to provide solar energy systems to 10,000 households over the next month, with an ambitious target of reaching 100,000 homes by year-end.

The move is part of the state’s efforts to diversify its power sources and reduce reliance on the national grid.
