Nigeria has congratulated South Africa on the occasion of its 31st Freedom Day, commemorated on April 27. In a statement released on Monday, the Minister of Foreign Affairs, Ambassador Yusuf Maitama Tuggar, conveyed the message through ministry spokesperson, Kimiebi Ebienfa.

Ambassador Tuggar extended warm felicitations to South Africa’s Minister of International Relations and Cooperation, Ronald Lamola, noting the significance of the day in marking the country’s triumph over apartheid and the enduring spirit of democracy and unity.

“Nigeria and South Africa share a deep, historic bond rooted in decades of solidarity during the anti-apartheid struggle,” Tuggar said. “As we reflect on this milestone, we recall Nigeria’s steadfast support, including diplomatic, material, and moral contributions, as part of our commitment to justice and pan-Africanism.”

He emphasized the shared responsibilities of both countries—as two of Africa’s largest economies and democracies—in promoting peace, security, and inclusive development across the continent.

Looking ahead, Tuggar reaffirmed Nigeria’s dedication to enhancing bilateral ties with South Africa in areas such as trade, investment under the African Continental Free Trade Area (AfCFTA), cultural exchange, and youth empowerment.

“We stand with South Africa in honoring the sacrifices of liberation icons like Walter Sisulu, Nelson Mandela, Govan Mbeki, and Thabo Mbeki,” he said. “Together, we remain committed to building a peaceful, united, and prosperous Africa.”
