The Nigerian Senate has launched an investigation into Cameroon’s alleged annexation of Nigerian maritime territories, including the mangrove islands and villages of Effiat clan in Mbo Local Government Area of Akwa Ibom.

The probe was triggered by a motion sponsored by Senator Aniekan Bassey (PDP-Akwa Ibom), who alleged that Cameroon’s encroachment has resulted in significant economic losses for Nigeria.

According to Bassey, the affected areas are home to over 2,560 oil wells and gas reserves, which are being exploited by Cameroon. He argued that the annexation is illegal, citing the 1913 Anglo-Japan treaties and the International Court of Justice ruling of October 2002.

The Senate has constituted an ad-hoc committee, chaired by Senator Jimoh Ibrahim (APC-Ondo), to investigate the matter and report back within two weeks. The committee includes senators from various states, including Bayelsa, Borno, and Rivers.

Senator Barau Jibrin (APC-Kano) expressed support for the investigation, urging the government to take action to protect Nigeria’s territorial integrity and economic interests.

Senator Victor Umeh (LP-Anambra) also called for swift action, saying that Nigeria cannot afford to lose its territorial claims to Cameroon.

The development comes amid ongoing tensions between Nigeria and Cameroon over border demarcations, despite previous ICJ rulings and bilateral agreements.

The Senate has urged the President to engage diplomatic relations on the issue and to take necessary steps to protect Nigeria’s sovereignty.
