Adimabua Chukwuka, a 31-year-old Nigerian man, has been arrested on charges of first-degree murder following the death of a homeless individual in Toronto.
Toronto police took Chukwuka into custody late on Friday afternoon, shortly after the body of 60-year-old Mario Ferreira was found near the University of Toronto campus.
Investigators have indicated that surveillance footage shows Chukwuka allegedly attacking Ferreira with debris—possibly from a dumpster or a construction site—while the victim was resting on a bench at approximately 5:20 a.m. on Thursday.
Chukwuka’s criminal history spans nearly a decade, with a record of violent offenses. In 2014, he was charged with multiple stabbings, facing ten counts including attempted murder, aggravated assault, and violation of probation.
In April 2022, he faced additional charges after allegedly robbing one man with a knife and stabbing another twice in the chest in a separate incident. The charges from that case included assault with a weapon, robbery, and possession of a dangerous weapon.
The resolution of his previous cases remains unclear as authorities continue their investigation into Ferreira’s death.
