Kemi Badenoch, leader of the UK Conservative Party, is facing widespread criticism after suggesting a 15-year wait for immigrants to apply for British citizenship. The proposal has particularly angered Nigerians, who represent a significant portion of the UK’s immigrant population, calling it excessive and unjust.
As part of her first major policy move as Tory leader, Badenoch seeks to tighten immigration laws, raising the minimum period for applying for Indefinite Leave to Remain (ILR) from five to ten years.
Additionally, her plan includes provisions to deny permanent residency to immigrants who claim benefits, seek social housing, or have criminal records. This has ignited further outrage, particularly among Nigerians, who argue that the policy unfairly punishes hardworking immigrants seeking a stable life.
Critics also point to Badenoch’s own immigrant background, accusing her of closing the doors that once helped her succeed. Many have turned to social media to express their frustration.
