The Nigeria Meteorological Agency (NiMet) has unveiled its 2025 Seasonal Climate Prediction (SCP), providing critical insights into the country’s climate trends for the upcoming year.

According to the SCP, Nigeria can expect a mostly normal rainy season, with some areas experiencing shorter or longer seasons. Temperatures will be generally warmer than average across the country, with significant rainfall events predicted at the beginning of the year.

The SCP also highlights the impact of climate change on health, particularly the spread of malaria, meningitis, and heat stress. NiMet Director General/CEO, Professor Charles Anosike, emphasized the importance of the SCP for local governments, farmers, and other stakeholders.

“Climate change is a pressing issue that requires proactive measures,” Professor Anosike said. “Our SCP provides critical information to help mitigate the impacts of climate change and ensure a more resilient Nigeria.”

The SCP’s release comes at a critical time, as Nigeria’s local governments have recently been granted financial autonomy by the Supreme Court. This development is expected to empower local councils to take action on climate change and provide more effective climate services to their communities.

NiMet has pledged to continue providing inclusive climate services, collaborating with rural farmers, persons with disabilities, and other stakeholders to ensure that everyone has access to vital climate information.

The full SCP report is available on NiMet’s website, and the agency encourages all stakeholders to utilize this critical information to build a more climate-resilient Nigeria.
