The Nigerian Meteorological Agency (NiMet) has issued a warning about impending heat stress, advising residents in 19 states, as well as the South-East and coastal regions, to take necessary precautions. The affected states include Kebbi, Niger, Kwara, Oyo, Kogi, Nasarawa, Benue, Enugu, Anambra, Abia, Ebonyi, Cross River, and the Federal Capital Territory (FCT), as well as parts of the South-West, Taraba, Adamawa, Plateau, Kaduna, Zamfara, and Sokoto.
NiMet forecasts that rising temperatures and high humidity levels over the next few days may cause significant thermal discomfort. The agency highlighted potential health risks such as fatigue, irritability, reduced concentration, impaired motor skills, and decreased productivity.
To stay safe, NiMet advises residents to stay cool with fans, air conditioning, or shaded areas, dress in light, breathable clothing, drink plenty of water, avoid sun exposure between 12 PM and 3 PM and use sun protection like hats, sunglasses, and sunscreen.
