Charles Anosike, the Director General and Chief Executive Officer of the Nigerian Meteorological Agency (NiMet), has highlighted that the agency’s partnerships with universities and other higher institutions in Nigeria will greatly support farmers.
In a statement issued by the agency on Thursday, Anosike explained, “NiMet’s growing network of university partners enhances the weather and climate data we gather, alongside the data produced by our own weather stations. This wealth of information improves the accuracy of our forecasts, aligning with our mission to benefit local farmers and other stakeholders.”
He also mentioned that the agency will continue to monitor the performance of the Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) signed with universities and institutions to ensure that all parties meet their responsibilities.
Responding, Professor Sunday Bako, Vice Chancellor of Taraba State University, said that the aim of the partnership with NiMet is to address the needs of both the university community and the surrounding agrarian population.
“Our departments of geography, agriculture, and ecotourism at Taraba State University stand to gain from this collaboration,” Bako noted. “Additionally, our agricultural faculty offers extension programs that will help us raise awareness about sustainable farming and climate-smart practices, using the data provided by the weather stations.”
The statement further revealed that the MoU will last for four years and is subject to renewal. The overall goal of the collaboration is to advance meteorological, climatological, and climate change-related activities across Nigeria.
