Nutrition experts have issued a warning to Nigerians to refrain from eating fruits unwashed from the point of purchase, citing the risk of bacterial and fungal infections. The experts emphasized that eating contaminated fruits can lead to food poisoning, hospitalization, and other health complications.
According to Registered Dietician Nutritionist Ede Ebele, unwashed fruits can expose individuals to harmful bacteria like E. coli and Salmonella. She noted that pesticide residue and chemicals used in farming may also remain on the skin of the fruits, posing potential health risks.
Ebele explained that fruits are often handled by multiple people or stored inappropriately, increasing the chances of cross-contamination. She advised that a simple rinse before eating can help reduce the risks and keep individuals safe.
Prof. Wasiu Afolabi, a former President of the Nutrition Society of Nigeria, also warned against consuming unwashed fruits, citing the risk of ingesting dirt, bacteria, or toxic substances. He emphasized that many vendors use chemicals to preserve or ripen fruits artificially, which can be harmful when consumed.
Afolabi noted that some fruits are ripened using chemicals that can accumulate in the body over time, potentially leading to toxicity and long-term health problems. He advised Nigerians to desist from the habit of consuming unwashed fruits and to thoroughly wash them with clean water before eating.
