Gynaecologists have emphasized the importance of pregnant women starting antenatal care between six and eight weeks to reduce the risks of complications and promote a healthy pregnancy experience.
The experts advised that as soon as a woman confirms her pregnancy, she should consult a gynaecologist without delay. They stressed that early antenatal registration helps detect problems on time and prevent complications like ectopic pregnancy and rupture of ectopic pregnancy.
The gynaecologists noted that women with hypertension, diabetes, and epilepsy should seek immediate care once their pregnancy is confirmed to receive medications safe for use during pregnancy.
Prof. Christopher Aimakhu, Second Vice President of the Society of Gynaecology and Obstetrics of Nigeria, advised women to register for antenatal care after their second missed period, around eight weeks of pregnancy.
Aimakhu emphasized that early antenatal booking ensures early counseling, monitoring, and prevention of complications. He also stressed the importance of women with pre-existing medical conditions seeking care immediately after confirming their pregnancy.
Another expert, Prof. Preye Fiebai, President of the Association for Fertility and Reproductive Health, recommended preconception care clinics for women before getting pregnant. He advised women to see a gynaecologist as soon as they confirm their pregnancy.
The experts decried the late hospital presentation and ANC registration, noting that this practice is common across the country. They emphasized that early registration is cost-effective and allows expectant mothers to maximize the benefits of antenatal care.
