As Muslims worldwide begin observing the Holy Month of Ramadan, United Nations Secretary-General António Guterres has shared a message of peace, solidarity, and support for those celebrating. In his video message, Guterres extended his warmest wishes to Muslims and highlighted the values of compassion, empathy, and generosity that define Ramadan.

Guterres emphasized that Ramadan is not just a time for spiritual reflection but also an opportunity to reconnect with family, community, and those less fortunate. He sent a special message of support to individuals facing displacement and violence, particularly in regions like Gaza, Sudan, the Sahel, and other conflict-affected areas.

“Ramadan embodies the values of compassion, empathy, and generosity,” Guterres said. “It is a time to reconnect with loved ones and remember the less fortunate. To all those experiencing displacement or violence, I send a message of support.”

The Secretary-General also spoke of his annual tradition of visiting Muslim communities worldwide during Ramadan, where he fasts alongside them. These visits serve to reaffirm the true face of Islam and inspire him with a deep sense of peace, reinforcing the spirit of the season.

Guterres concluded by calling on people worldwide to embrace the values of Ramadan, urging them to work together toward a more just and peaceful world. “Let us be uplifted by these values, embrace our shared humanity, and strive for a world built on peace and mutual respect,” he said.

He ended his message with “Ramadan Kareem,” extending his best wishes to all observing the sacred month.
